RYN Ceramics is a small batch pottery studio made by architect and designer Taryn Bone. The work is playful, explorative, and always evolving.
Taryn lives and works in Somerville, Massachusetts. All wheel work and firings occur at Mudflat Studio, while the handbuilt pieces are done in Taryn’s home studio.
I came back to clay after nearly twenty years away.
I was first introduced to ceramics while minoring in art at the University of Missouri, where I learned handbuilding through experimentation rather than perfection. The work was sculptural and architectural, shaped by my studies in architecture and my interest in form and structure. That early experience quietly set the foundation for how I still approach clay today.
In 2024, I began working at Mudflat Studio, starting again with handbuilding before moving to the wheel. Handbuilding felt immediately familiar. Wheel throwing came more slowly. I am still learning, still refining, and deeply committed to the process. Both handbuilding and throwing offer different kinds of focus, and I value them equally.
Clay has become a grounding practice in my daily life. Working with my hands brings clarity and calm, and it allows me to be more present in the rest of my world. I make because I love the process, and I sell this work so it can live in homes where handmade objects are valued and used.
Each piece is made slowly and intentionally. Fingerprints remain. Subtle irregularities are embraced. These marks are not flaws but evidence of touch, time, and care.
As technology continues to accelerate around us, this work is my way of honoring human making. Tools can support creativity, but they cannot replace the hand, the process, or the meaning behind it.
Art remains, and should remain, human.
